Michelle Akins and Melissa Hartbower from Wells Fargo Insurance Services USA will provide an overview of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590), signed into law by President Obama on March 23rd, 2010, and the companion bill, the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act (H.R. 4872), signed into law on March 30, 2010, which make up the new Federal Health Care Reform Law.
The Health Care Reform Law consists of several interrelated components addressing market reform, individual and employer responsibility provisions, along with revenue raisers and various other provisions. Michelle and Melissa will review the various provisions and requirements as well as their phase-in timelines.
Michelle M. Akins, SPHR, CCP is a Managing Broker, Employee Benefits for Wells Fargo Insurance Services USA. Michelle earned her B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), and has been a Licensed Life and Disability Agent since 2006. Michelle started her professional career in human resources in 1994 working in the hospitality, technology and insurance industries. Michelle has been a Managing Broker with Wells Fargo Insurance Services USA since 2008 and currently serves as a co-team Lead for the Sacramento Area Human Resources Association’s Mentor Program.
Melissa A. Hartbower is also a Managing Broker, Employee Benefits for Wells Fargo Insurance Services USA. Melissa has an A.A. Degree in Liberal Arts from American River College and earned her B.A. in Business Management from Saint Mary’s College of California, Moraga. She began her insurance career in 1984 paying life and disability claims for Pacific Standard Life Insurance in Davis, California and she has subsequently worked on the broker side of the insurance industry with AON, Willis Corroon, McGee & Thielen, Marsh/Mercer, and Athens Benefits. She has been a Managing Broker with Wells Fargo Insurance Services USA since February 2007 and has been a licensed Life & Disability Agent since 1990. Melissa has served two terms on the board of the Sacramento Association of Health Underwriters.
