Margaret R. Smith, CPA will discuss the origin of professions and the cultural development of ethics. She will cover some memorable frauds and give a new perspective on how individuals can work to assure ethical behavior in modern society. Margaret will lead us in a group discussion of different scenarios of ethics in accounting and will also share with us a self-assessment testing our own level of ethics.
Margaret R. Smith, CPA, graduated with a degree in Sociology from the University of California Berkeley and obtained her Masters in Taxation from Golden Gate University. She is a Certified Public Accountant and also has a certificate of Educational Achievement in Governmental Accounting and Auditing.
Margaret’s main focus and expertise is taxation but she also manages a busy auditing practice with her partner, Jennifer Jensen, CPA of Jensen Smith Certified Public Accountants. Since 1997 Margaret has lectured for Gear-Up Tax Seminars, a division of Thomson Publishing, on topics ranging from Professional Ethics and Business Taxation, to Auditing of Nonprofit Organizations. She has also written publications and training manuals for Gear-Up and the Nonprofit Resource Center in Sacramento, California.
Margaret is heavily involved in community service, having served as the Treasurer of United Way, a board member of various nonprofit organizations, a ten-year member of the Advisory Council and Steering Committee for the Nevada County Community Leadership Institute, a member of The FEMA Board for Nevada and Sierra Counties, a member of Soroptimist International, and President of the Kiwanis Club of Lincoln, CA. She is currently serves as Treasurer of Kiwanis Club of Lincoln. In 1990 Margaret was awarded United Way Volunteer of the Year, in 1991 she was nominated to be in President George Bush’s Circle of a Thousand Points of Light, and in 1993 Margaret received the Women Helping Women Award from Soroptimist International. She is also a member of the AICPA and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants. |
